June 20 & 21, 2004 - Rivers Ends Campsite, Tybee Island, Georgia

We made it to Savannah (and stayed here at Tybee Island)! Crammed-in campsite, but quaint. We had come to Tybee Island last year after a job I had with Liberty Mutual in Savannah. Huge friggin' beach and just a nice out of the way spot. The campsite had this giant pink bunny rabbit as some kind of landmark. Schnookie was freaking out when we first pulled in that we would be shoved in between a couple of huge fifth wheel trailers. Ended up next to couple with a pop-up trailer. They watched in amusement while we did the 20 minute process of removing the truck camper off the bed of the truck. Once it was finished I turned to them and said, "Show's over, move on!"

You'd also be amazed at how much sand can stick to a Shih-Tzu and end up in your mattress.

Explored Savannah for a day. Schnookie had to have her beignets and cafe au lait at Huey's. I had to have my bag of glazed pecans from River Street Sweets. We thought of bringing back bags of the stuff for all you people...but we said screw it (we'd probably eat them all before we got back). If you're ever in Savannah, get a bag of glazed pecans. (So there.) :-P

Last time we were on Tybee Island we went to a joint called the Crab Shack. I had snarfed an entire seafood sampler plate that time and felt obligated to do it again. We both thought the ambience and appearance were kinda cool. Nautical theme throughout. Upside down bushel baskets for lighting fixtures, little lights hanging from tree branches and THE HOLE in the middle of the table to throw your shellfish exoskeletons was kinda neat.

On the last night on Tybee Island, we lived through the worlds most intense thunderstorm. A couple of lighting strikes sounded like they hit a street over from us. Being in a little fiberglass box during one of these certainly isn't boring.

Uhhh...it is June and this is the SOUTH! Come on, I knew it would be in the 90's! Yes, we have been running the AC continuously. Just a couple of wusses, I guess. But I don't require a satellite set-up at every campsite--unlike SOME people! Oh, the horror of having to read a book or even...*gasp*...TALK to each other!

Burt Ruttan's "Spaceship One" launched successfully into space this morning--the first privately funded spaceship. We watched on (she shamefully admitted) satellite television.

[FROM JOURNAL] June 21, 9:31 p.m.
Sitting here at River's End Campground; night number 2. There's a king bastard of a storm going on out there. The only time I've seen so much strobey lightning is in some cheezy Hollywood horror film. Very impressive!

An aside: it's always interesting to check out the "comfort station" (restroom/showers) at the different RV parks & campsites. The one at River's End was in considerable need of repair...especially the faucets.

We went into beautiful Savannah (I want to live there!!!) today--ate at my favorite restaurant, Huey's on River Street. I was drooling for some of their beignets. (To die for!) And, of course, we had to stop at River Street Sweets for freshly made pralines! Eric wanted to find a Starbuck's to check his email, so I directed him to the one on Broughton Street. I ran across the street to Primary Art Supply (the students from SCAD--Savannah College of Art and Design--shop there) and bought a few goodies.

We also found a Best Buy and bought a copy of Microsoft Streets & Trips travel and map software (the better to find our way around). Then bought some other crap at Wal-Mart and "The Pig" (Piggly Wiggly). And a dozen original glazed at KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS! Mmm-mmm...talk about a bite of heaven!
