June 15, 2004 - Hatteras Sands RV Park, Hatteras Village, North Carolina

Went to the Wright Brothers’ National Memorial. Saw the spot where they flew for the first time. Took the obligatory pictures. Started noticing the local culture. Brew-Thru--a drive through liquor store! Painted Pegasus horses everywhere. I guess they had a recent celebration of the "first in flight" motto, so some kook coerced a bunch of local business owners to buy a blank horse to decorate and display on their property. Schookie has all the pictures.

Horses! There are fiberglass horses all along the main road of the Outer Banks--each decorated/painted differently & wonderfully!

Wednesday, June 17. Nearly 1 p.m.
Sitting in line for the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry. For 1 hour now. Damn good thing we left our campsite early, because our reserved spot on the Ocracoke-Cedar Island ferry (the long--2 1/2 hours--leg of our journey back to the mainland) leaves at 3:00. This leg of the voyage takes 40 minutes, and we have to be athe ferry (to Cedar Island) at 2:30.

Yeehaw! We're finally on board. (1:08 p.m.)

Same day. 4:15 p.m. Aboard Ocracoke-Cedar Island ferry.
Tried napping, but couldn't even doze--couldn't get comfortable. We're in the noisiest spot: right beside the engine, which wouldn't necessarily be a problem by itself, but it's impossible to stretch out across the seat in this truck, as the two seatbelt holders stick straight up (and into one's body). Mei-Li is in the back. Eric is in the passenger lounge, working on the website. It's very warm and humid.

[NOTE: Long, boring description of dream I had the night before which included a romance with Lee Marvin. . .]

Almost 5 p.m. Thankfully! I'm more than ready to get off this damn boat!!

Tonight we spend the night in the hamlet of Sea Level. (Named because. . .?) Then it's off to 2 nights in Myrtle Beach, S.C.--at MB KOA where they have wireless Internet access! Yippee!

(Ack! I put the AC on for a few minutes--for some relief.)

I'm almost too tired to budge from the truck...and I don't want to leave Mei-Li alone, but I do have to pee...)

5 p.m. 1/2 hour to landing.
